SSRF Conducts Rapid Multisectoral Needs Assessment at Nyarigolo IDP Site, Morobo County
Date: July 23, 2025
Location: Nyarigolo IDP Site, Panyume Payam, Morobo County, Central Equatoria State
The South Sudan Relief Foundation (SSRF) conducted a rapid multisectoral needs assessment at the Nyarigolo Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) site between July 18–20, 2025, to evaluate the humanitarian situation of displaced populations affected by ongoing conflict in Morobo County.
The assessment identified a total of 8,474 internally displaced persons (2,109 households) currently living under highly vulnerable conditions. The population includes 3,708 males, 4,766 females, and 45 unaccompanied or separated children, with women and children representing the most affected groups.
Key Findings
The assessment revealed critical humanitarian gaps across all major sectors, including shelter, food security, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), health, education, protection, and livelihoods.
Shelter & NFIs: Most households are living in temporary makeshift shelters that are severely affected by heavy rains. Essential non-food items such as blankets, mosquito nets, and cooking materials remain insufficient.
Food Security & Livelihoods: Over 80% of households are food insecure, relying on negative coping mechanisms due to lack of sustainable food sources or livelihood support.
WASH: The community has limited access to safe water, with only one borehole serving the entire population and widespread absence of latrines, leading to open defecation practices.
Health: There are no functional health services within the site, leaving pregnant women, children, and vulnerable groups without access to essential medical care.
Education: Children are out of school due to the absence of learning spaces, scholastic materials, and trained teachers, increasing risks of protection violations.
Protection: No formal protection systems exist, leaving women and children exposed to risks including gender-based violence and family separation.
Humanitarian Response and Gaps
While limited assistance has been provided by partners such as Action Against Hunger (cash support, hygiene kits, chlorine tablets, and buckets) and the Stromme Foundation (carpet distribution), the scale of support remains insufficient compared to the severity of needs.
Conclusion
The situation in Nyarigolo IDP site remains critical and requires urgent, coordinated, and multisectoral humanitarian intervention. SSRF calls upon humanitarian actors, donors, and government stakeholders to prioritize life-saving interventions, strengthen service delivery, and support long-term recovery efforts for displaced communities in Morobo County.
